Sometimes just directly stuffing data into the DOM is more reliable than running it though jQuery. Lesson learned.

yup - IE8 will sometimes render extra lines of text when it decides it doesn't like carriage returns in the View Source. string.trim() ftw!

Stop the presses - just found something that renders ENTIRELY wrong in IE8 - and it worked correctly in IE7! ouch.
