More sows with spring cubs have arrived, including 402 and her three. Her cubs look great, though she is a little thin.
Brooks Lodge is completely shut down and over the next few weeks the NPS will also move out, leaving the bears to feed on the salmon.
Lots of bears still around camp, though not much "activity". They mostly sleep and eat.
Brooks Camp is closed and the last remaining visitors have gone home. A few NPS and lodge employees remain to winterize camp.
Lots of bear activity, but east winds and rain make it less ideal for the visitors today.
Saturday was a rough day for visitors and the staff: The wind was blowing pretty consistently at 40mph, with gusts to 60!
Each day we see a new bear or two. The salmon are spawning and dying, so the feeding is getting incredibly easy for the bears.
Bear activity in the Lower River continues to pick up. Several sows with cubs as well as several individual bears are being seen each day.
Another day with about 10 bears around the lower river viewing area. No bears were seen at the falls.
A few more bears have been milling around the lower river today.
Calm, sunny day at camp. The white socks are out in full force. Can we get a little wind here?
So far today we have seen at least 6 different bears, all around the lower river/Naknek Lake beach.
We're only seeing 1-2 bears intermittently throughout the day near Brooks Camp. Frequent visitors are female bear 608 and male bear 489.
We are still seeing a few bears per day at the Falls, and bears move through the Lower River area intermittently throughout the day.
Bear numbers were up again at the falls late yesterday evening. Up to 12 bears were seen fishing, including the usual large males.
Still a lot of salmon in the river and lake, but bear numbers continue to dwindle. Today there were about 6 bears at the falls.
Five bears were seen fishing at the falls tonight.
Another slow day at the Lower River/Camp area. A few bears are wandering around and maybe 10 bears are currently at Brooks Falls.
Things are beginning to slow down. Few fish are jumping and we have up to about 12 bears at the falls, but usually less. Feels like August
Bear 708 (Amelia) was running up and down the beach playing with her spring cub. Good to see that she has retained her playful nature.
